Driving to Grandma’s or flying to Europe for the holidays? Travel this time of year is notoriously busy and potentially stressful. Whether you are taking a three hour trip in the car or a ten hour flight with two layovers between, these ten apps can help you breathe a little easier. Your iPhone or iPad (all ten apps are accessible for both!) will help lead you on your merry way.

Fuelzee – FREE

Wondering whether the best gas is at the next exit or two exits ahead? Fuelzee is here to help. Search for fuel stations, compare prices, and get directions to the least expensive option using the map view. If you check in and report fuel prices, you can earn points for rewards on foods, fuel, drinks, and candy!

Family Car Games – $1.99

We’ve previously shared great apps for toddlers and children, but Family Car Games has a variety of games to take your kiddo’s eyes away from the screen. Includes how-to-play instructions for 100 creative, fun, and challenging family games with no equipment needed. A great app for lengthy car rides, but can also be used any time your kids may have idle time this holiday season.

Skyscanner – FREE

Booking last minute flights? Needing to come back early? Skyscanner helps you save time and money by searching flights from over 1000 airlines. Results can be filtered by price, airlines, and take-off and landing times.

Similar to Skyscanner, KAYAK is another flight comparison tool. KAYAK takes it even further by letting you compare (and book) hotels and car rentals as well as flights. You can also view and manage your itinerary and look up baggage fees.

TripIt – FREE

TripIt is my go-to app for all things travel. Simply forward your confirmation emails to them and they sort out all of the rest. Whether it is flights, restaurant reservations, or rental cars, TripIt neatly organizes all pertinent information and provided a visual of flight times and flight numbers, as well as useful information like booking costs and layover lengths. You can also sync trip plans with your Apple Calendar, Outlook, or Google Calendar and get directions, maps and weather for each destination.

Stop JetLag – FREE

One of the worst parts of traveling to a different time zone is the days it can sometimes take for your body to adjust. If you’re hoping to avoid sleeping through the better part of your trip or laying wide awake at night, Stop JetLag is here to help you start to adjust your sleep schedule several days before take-off and throughout your travels. Stop Jet Lag considers your specific flight schedule, multi-stops and connections in relationship to your normal daily routines. Gate Guru – FREE

Gate Guru provides real-time flight status with push notifications along with helpful information about individual airports. Once your input your itinerary, the app does the rest. No more searching for your information on flight boards or wondering where to eat in the airport. Gate Guru provides easy access to information like your check-in terminal, terminal and gate arrival and departure information, local weather, real time flight status, and estimated TSA security wait times for your checkpoints. If you have a delay or layover, Gate Guru can also help you find airport food and amenity information, customized to your arrival and departure terminal!

Free Wifi Finder – FREE

Out taking pictures all day and hoping to upload a few to Instagram without paying data and roaming fees? Free Wi-Fi Finder uses your devices’ GPS to locate free Wi-Fi Internet access at over 145,000 locations worldwide using their “Near me” search. You can filter the results by type (library, restaurant, etc.) and access address info.

Viber – FREE

Viber is a convenient and totally free way to communicate with friends and family when out of the country. All you need is a WiFi signal. The app syncs with your mobile contacts, automatically detecting which of your contacts also uses the app, and allow you to freely text, call, and send photo and video messages as you travel!

FlyRight – FREE

Did you have a bad experience with a rude gate agent? Hoping to get a little extra help with your lost bag that no one seems to have the answers about? Want to shout out the airline that was particularly kind to your children? FlyRight is a real-time customer service app that uses twitter to get your message directly to an airline with no character limits. Airlines can click the link and see a full and detailed report of what happened. Requires a twitter account.
